ALPhANOV
Company Description
ALPhANOV is the technology center of the competitiveness cluster “Route des Lasers” based in the Bordeaux region. With the help of the Aquitaine Regional Authority and in collaboration with the CEA CESTA, the CNRS and Bordeaux universities, Alphanov contributes technically to innovative projects to create new activities and jobs. With around 750m² of lab space, Alphanov employs more than 24 engineers and doctors specialized in optics and lasers. With more than 1000 contracts realized to date, and contribution to tens of national and European collaborative projects, Alphanov is now a reference for R&D transfer in optics and lasers.
ALPhANOV offers dedicated facilities and equipment for laser developments, implementation and characterization. It has strong expertise in laser micro-machining developments, optical design and prototyping in vision, microscopy and spectroscopy, and fiber laser sources and optical fiber components.

Press Releases
| ALPhANOV awarded Photon de Bronze at Opto 2011 For the second consecutive year, ALPhANOV was the winner of a prize for innovation awarded at Opto 2011. The award-winning product this year is a mid-infrared supercontinuum fiber laser, that the start-up company Novae will industrialize and commercialize.
After being awarded the ‘Photon d’Argent’ last year at the Opto exhibition for its Terahertz camera, the technology center ALPhANOV receives this year the ‘Photon de bronze’ award for a new type of fiber laser. These awards emphasize ALPhANOV’s innovation capabilities and the quality of its technological support to business development projects. Awarded products, Terahertz camera and fiber laser, will be the starting point of two new companies, Nethis and Novae. Both projects were also winners of the 2011 national competition to create innovative technology companies, supported by OSEO.
The Coverage IR laser system, developed within ALPhANOV, has a very high brilliance and emits a plurality of wavelengths in the mid-infrared range. This new laser architecture is the result of collaboration with the team of Sébastien Février, professor at the XLIM laboratory at the University of Limoges and currently working at the CELIA laboratory at the University of Bordeaux. Through the use of specialty optical fibers, the average output power of the laser, distributed throughout the spectrum, reaches 1 W. This source has many applications in the field of scientific and industrial instrumentation, particularly in the areas of medical imaging, micro-spectroscopy or non-destructive testing. |
| ALPhANOV strengthens and expands ALPhANOV, the Optics and Laser Technology Center of the Route des Lasers cluster (Bordeaux – France) just hired three new employees, and fleshing out its management team. These new hires accompany a reorganization of activities and a new location at the City of Photonics in Pessac in the outskirts of Bordeaux.
ALPhANOV, the technology center of the Bordeaux Route des Lasers cluster, has completed the reorganization of its business into three business units:
- Micromachining laser: study of various phenomena of interaction laser / material; application of these phenomena to any type of material, including living tissue; development of industrial processes. - Lasers: development of laser sources and components, with expertise in special optical fibers; implementation of these elements; development of new architectures. - Systems: Design and production of optical systems; development and provision of a platform for terahertz and photo-thermal imaging; microscopes customization; manufacturing of micro-machining laser systems.
Each division offers its core partners and customers ALPhANOV’s full expertise:
- Participation in collaborative projects coordinated by the center or not, to accelerate technology transfer between research laboratories and companies or to help them develop innovative products - Tailored solutions to technological or industrial problems, based on the technical and human resources from the center, - Process validation and small series manufacturing - Internal research and product catalogs from this research
Three new employees have joined the new organization :
- Pascal DUPRIEZ heads the Lasers division, responsible for developing novel fiber components and laser sources to provide solutions to various scientific and industrial applications. Prior to joining Alphanov, Pascal Dupriez was Head of Advanced Laser Systems at Fianium, developing ultrafast fiber lasers including high-energy femtosecond lasers and high-power supercontinuum sources. He completed his PhD in high-power fiber lasers at the Optoelectronics Research Centre (ORC) in Southampton, UK.
- Rainer KLING heads the Laser Micromachining division. He holds a doctoral thesis, conducted at the Institute for Plasma Physics at the University of Hannover, and headed previously the Department Production and Systems Technology of the Laser Zentrum Hanover (LZH). These functions and his expertise in photovoltaic technologies, micro machining and processing of CFRP led him to exercise responsibility in various prestigious organizations: Rainer Kling is Session Chair for ICALEO and Photonics West conferences and expert for the Journal of Production Engineering.
- Arnaud ZOUBIR recently joined ALPhANOV. He is in charge of business and collaborative projects development. He holds a Ph.D. in Optics (CREOL/University of Central Florida) and conducted research at the Australian National University and Osaka University. Before Joining Alphanov, Arnaud Zoubir worked at HORIBA Jobin Yvon for five years, as the Worldwide Sales Manager for Scientific products.
Installed since its creation in 2007 in the heart of the Bordeaux University campus in Talence, ALPhANOV, which currently hires 25 employees, has just completed its historic location with new premises within the City of Photonics in Pessac. The Lasers Division, occupying the new premises, is thus on the same area as several partner companies, such as Amplitude Systèmes, EOLITE Systems, Azur Light Systems or Laser 3S, a proximity that should further encourage collaborative projects. Eventually, ALPhANOV as a whole will move to the Centre Optique Aquitain at the end of 2012, currently under construction on the campus of Talence. The center will host ALPhANOV, together with the Aquitaine branch of the Institute of Optics Graduate School and the training platform Pyla. |
