Since 1996, SPIE has awarded CEUs to more than 24,000 short course participants. The CEU is a nationally recognized unit of measure used to quantify continuing education and training activities.
Definition of CEU
Continuing Education Units (CEUs) were created as a way to document education in specifically developed activities for adult learners in a variety of disciplines. One CEU is defined as "10 contact hours of participation in an organized continuing education experience under responsible sponsorship, capable direction, and qualified instruction". One full-day SPIE course equals 0.7 CEU (deducting scheduled break and lunch times). A half-day SPIE course equals 0.4 CEU (deducting one half-hour break).
SPIE has been approved as an accredited provider of CEUs by IACET, The International Association for Continuing Education and Training (Provider #1002092). In obtaining this approval, SPIE has demonstrated that it complies with the ANSI/IACET Standards which are widely recognized as standards of good practice internationally. The mission of IACET is to promote and advance quality continuing education and training. SPIE, like other accredited providers, is committed to developing educational experiences which have a clear purpose, result from careful planning, are taught by qualified instructors and which are routinely evaluated. See IACET's Criteria and Guidelines.
