SPIE was a proud supporter of The International Year of Astronomy (IYA2009) - recognized during SPIE Optics + Photonics 2009.

SPIE joined 37 other global instiutions (including ASTC, European Space Agency, NASA, Scientists in the World, United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs) to become an IYA 2009 Organisational Node

Celebrate both The 400th anniversary of the telescope and The International Year of Astronomy.

These events celebrate the first astronomical use of the telescope by Galileo – an event that initiated 400 years of astronomical discoveries and triggered a scientific revolution which profoundly affected our worldview.

Join the celebration. Attend at a variety of special events from the telescope display in the Exhibition Hall to "Star Gazing" at the Welcome Reception.

400th Anniversary of the Telescope Events at
    SPIE Optics+Photonics:

     • Antique Telescope Display
     • Astro-Photo Wall
     • Historic Photos
     • "Star Gazing" event during the Welcome Reception
     • Live Data Feed from Australian Observatory
     • See the new Carbon Truss 24 inch f/7.8 Ritchey-Chrétien
     • Astro-photo Workshop

SPIE wishes to thank our "astronomy stars":

Ryan Hannahoe, Fair Dinkum Skies Observatory (USA)

SPIE wishes to thank Ryan Hannahoe who generously provided his time, knowledge, passion for teaching, and award winning astro-photography.

    Antique Telescope Display

John Greivenkamp, University of Arizona (USA)

SPIE wishes to thank John Greivenkamp, who generously provided his telescope display, time, and great knowledge.
