Logistics and outcomes of the Rubin Observatory LSST camera shipment

19 June 2024 • 17:30 - 19:00 Japan Standard Time | Room G5, North - 1F

Abstract

The shipment of the LSST Camera from SLAC National Lab in California to Rubin Observatory in Chile was completed successfully in spring 2024 after extensive road testing of the Camera’s shipping container. Prior to final shipment, two local driving tests and one full test shipment from California to Chile were completed with a mass simulator to validate the performance of the wire rope isolator system by collecting data on acceleration events and vibration modes. This paper presents the results from the second test drive as well as the final shipment of the LSST Camera and associated hardware to the observatory.

Margaux Lopez graduated from the California Institute of Technology in 2015 with a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering and started work at SLAC National Laboratory in Menlo Park, California later that year. Margaux spent a few years at SLAC designing fixtures for the testing and handling of the Rubin Observatory LSST Camera and its subcomponents, all while pursuing a master’s degree in engineering, before relocating to Chile in 2019. There, she worked to prepare the Camera maintenance facility at the Rubin Observatory as well as test interfaces and procedures at the summit and finalize the shipping and receiving plan. In addition to engineering work, Margaux is passionate about science communication and education and coleads a science camp for underrepresented youth at SLAC every summer.
