4 June 2015: The Future Postponed: Why Declining Investment in Basic Research Threatens a U.S. Innovation Deficit: Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) calls for basic research investment that may in turn improve society by strengthening U.S. economic power and positively influencing healthcare, energy, and defense. 2 June 2015: FY 2016 Funding Bill approved for NASA, NIST, NOAA, NSF: NASA received a 2.8 percent increase. NSF budget increased from $50 million to $7.4 billion; any additional funds that become available will be appropriated to NSF. The bill prioritizes NOAA’s weather forecasting program. 100-page bill passed without offer of amendments. Read More

29 May 2015: Innovation: An American Imperative: A group of businesses, universities, and scientific organizations, including SPIE, have banded together in support of a congressional call to action to prioritize support of American innovation. Read more

22 May 2015: Call for innovative optical imaging and sensing research proposals: DARPA’s Defense Sciences Office (DSO) Revolutionary Enhancement of Visibility by Exploiting Active Light-fields (REVEAL) program is looking for new research proposals for optical imaging and sensing for high dimensional degrees of freedom of light across photon pathways. 21 May 2015: STEM advocate, physical chemistry researcher is new Guenther Congressional Fellow: University of Washington student Jennifer Brookes was selected as the 2015/2016 Arthur H. Guenther Congressional Fellow by SPIE and the Optical Society. Read More

5 May 2015: New proposed rules to impact ITAR; comment period ends 6 July: Proposed changes to Cateogry XII of the USML will affect “sensitive military technologies that impact U.S. national security interests.” Informational power point and sample comment are available. Read more
