27 August: House Hearing on Nanotechnology: “Nanotech is a true science race between the nations, and we should be encouraging the transition from research breakthroughs to commercial development.  I believe the U.S. should excel in this area.”  So stated House Subcommittee on Commerce, Manufacturing and Trade Chairman Lee Terry (R-NE) at a hearing last month on nanotechnology.

This was one of a series of hearings the subcommittee has held on the theme of a Nation of Builders, described as an "initiative to promote the success of American manufacturers and to help make American manufacturing more competitive in the global marketplace."  Earlier hearings have examined the steel, homebuilding, and aircraft manufacturing industries. 22 August: House Legislation: Energy Critical Elements Program: A version of H.R. 1022, the Securing Energy Critical Elements and American Jobs Act of 2014 (as introduced in March 2013), is being considered on the House Floor with differences form original version following a bipartisan discussion.  Read more

 

20 August: Update on Critical Materials Developments: Indicative of the awareness of Washington policy makers about the importance of critical materials are an announcement from the Office of Science and Technology Policy, action on the House floor on energy critical elements legislation, and a House subcommittee hearing. The public has until September 30 to respond to a White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) announcement entitled New Request for Information to Inform Strategy on Critical Materials. Read more

13 August: Administration Seeks Public Input on New "Strategy for American Innovation": “We want to gather bold ideas for how we as a nation can build on and extend into the future our historic strengths in innovation and discovery,” declares a recent blog post by the Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP).  OSTP and the National Economic Council are revising the Obama Administration’s Strategy for American Innovation and are seeking public input in the development of this revision.  Comments are due by September 23. : The National Photonics Initiative is organizing a District Visits Week for the week of August 11-15. During the August recess, have one of your Congressional representatives tour your facility and see firsthand the work in photonics taking place in their district. Read more
