Awards and honors

The Microfluidics award was presented to Rabin Dhakal, Iowa State Univ. of Science and Technology (USA) for "Transfer molding processes for nanoscale patterning of poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) films” (SPIE Paper No: 9705-8); co-authors Akshit Peer, Rana Biswas, Jaeyoun Kim, Iowa State Univ. of Science and Technology (USA). The award was presented by conference chairs Bonnie Gray, Simon Fraser Univ. (Canada) and Holger Becker, microfluidic ChipShop GmbH (Germany).

VECSELs Best Paper Award

The VECSELs Best Student Paper Award was presented by Conference Chair Keith Wilcox (Univ. of Dundee) to Luyao Xu (Univ. of California, Los Angeles) for the paper "Terahertz quantum cascade VECSEL" (9734-15). Other authors include Christopher Curwen, Philip Hon, Tatsuo Itoh, and Benjamin Williams (Univ. of California, Los Angeles).

Ocean Optics Best Paper Award

The Ocean Optics Young Investigator Award for Best Paper was presented to Wentao Wang (Florida State Univ.) for "Design of a multi-coordinating polymer as a platform for functionalizing metal, metal oxide and semiconductor nanocrystals" (9722-2); co-authors, Anshika Kapur (Florida State Univ.); Xin Ji, (Florida State Univ. and Ocean Nanotech, LLC); and Hedi Mattoussi (Florida State Univ.). The award was presented by David Creasey with Ocean Optics, and Colloidal Nanoparticles for Biomedical Applications conference chairs Wolfgang Parak (Philipps-Univ. Marburg), Marek Osiński (Univ. of New Mexico), and Program Committee member Hedi Mattoussi (Florida State Univ.).

JenLab Young Investigator Award

The JenLab Young Investigator Award for Best Paper was presented to Thomas Gottschall (Friedrich-Schiller-Univ. Jena) for “Four-wave mixing based light sources for real-world biomedical applications of coherent Raman microscopy” (9712-61); co-authors Tobias Meyer, Michael Schmitt (Friedrich-Schiller-Univ. Jena; Jürgen Popp (Friedrich-Schiller-Univ. Jena and Leibniz-Institut für Photonische Technologien e.V.); Jens Limpert, (Friedrich-Schiller-Univ. Jena); Andreas Tünnermann, Friedrich Schiller (Univ. Jena and Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Optics and Precision Engineering).

3-D Renewable Energy Green Photonics Award

The Green Photonics Award in Renewable Energy Generation: Fusion and Photovoltaics was accepted by Masahiro Suemitsu (Osaka Gas Co., Ltd.) for “Visible to near-infrared narrow-band thermal emitters based on silicon-rod photonic crystals” (9756-53)’ co-authors Tatsunori Tsutsumi (Kyoto Univ. Graduate School of Engineering); Takashi Asano (Kyoto Univ.); and Menaka De Zoysa and Susumu Noda (Kyoto Univ. Graduate School of Engineering). The award was presented by Green Photonics Symposium Chair Stephen Eglash (Stanford University).

Pascal Rol Award

The Pascal Rol Award for Best Paper in Ophthalmic Technologies was presented to Zhuolin Liu (Indiana Univ.) for “Imaging human retinal pigment epithelium cells using adaptive optics optical coherence tomography.” The award presented in Ophthalmic Technologies (9693) Conference by Wolfgang Drexler (left) (Medizinische Univ. Wien), and Arthur Ho (right) (Brien Holden Vision Institute).

PicoQuant Young Investigator Award

The PicoQuant Young Investigator Award for BiOS Best Paper was presented to Ivan Michel Antolovic (Univ. Delft), for "Analyzing blinking effects in super resolution localization microscopy with single-photon SPAD imagers"; co-authors are Samuel Burri and Claudio Bruschini (Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne), Ron Hoebe (Academisch Medisch Centrum, and Edoardo Charbon, (Technische Univ. Delft). The award was presented by conference chair Zygmunt Gryczynski.

Advanced Fab Tech best paper awards

The Best Paper Award in Advanced Fabrication Technologies was presented for "Ultrafast third-harmonic spectroscopy of single nanoantennas fabricated using helium-ion beam lithography" (9759-7). Authors are Martin Silies (right), Heiko Kollmann, Martin Esmann, Simon Becker (Carl von Ossietzky Universität Oldenburg); Xianji Piao (Seoul National University); Chuong Huynh (Carl Zeiss Microscopy, LLC); Lars-Oliver Kautschor and Guido Bösker (Carl Zeiss Microscopy GmbH); Henning Vieker, Andre Beyer, and Armin Gölzhäuser, (Universität Bielefeld); Namkyoo Park (Seoul National University) and Christoph Lienau (Carl von Ossietzky Universität Oldenburg).

The Best Student Paper Award in Advanced Fabrication Technologies was presented for "Investigation and optimization of Rowland ghosts in high-efficiency spectrometer gratings fabricated by e-beam lithography" (9759-9). Authors are Martin Heusinger (left) (Friedrich-Schiller-Universität), Michael Banasch, Vistec Electron Beam GmbH; Uwe Zeitner (Friedrich-Schiller-Universität and Fraunhofer-Institut für Angewandte Optik und Feinmechanik; and Thomas Flügel-Paul (Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Optics and Precision Engineering).
