Arizona State Univ.'s expanding research, education, and entrepreneurial endeavors in photonics engineering and science have led to formation of the Center for Photonics Innovation. SPIE Member Yong-Hang Zhang, professor in the School of Electrical, Computer, and Energy Engineering, has been named director.

The Arizona Board of Regents recently approved establishment of the center, which will combine university research and teaching resources in electrical engineering, physics, materials science and engineering, and bioengineering.

The center's research focuses on semiconductor photonic materials and devices and their applications.

Zhang has chaired and served on committees of several SPIE conferences, and authored more than 50 papers published by SPIE. He currently serves on the committee for the SPIE Photonics West conference on Laser Refrigeration of Solids, and is author of papers in three other conferences to be presented at the January meeting.
