María Yzuel receives Doctor Honoris Causa

SPIE Past President and Fellow María Yzuel (at left, above), a professor of optics at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB) received the Doctor Honoris Causa at the Universidad Miguel Hernández de Elche (UMH) recently.

Yzuel received the honor for her outstanding academic, teaching, and research activities, as well as for her work in scientific societies that has helped to internationalize Spanish research in optics. In particular, the award recognized work done in collaboration with SPIE Senior Member Ignacio Moreno (at right) a professor at UMH, who presented Yzuel with the award on behalf of UMH. Their collaboration began in 1999, and projects receive funds from the Spanish goverment.

Yzuel is a recipient of the SPIE Directors' Award, has been active in SPIE leadership, and has published more than 60 journal and proceedings articles with SPIE. She has supported or participated in numerous related acitivties, including the Active Learning in Optics and Photonics (ALOP) program, SPIE Student Chapters, Women in Optics, and education outreach.

In 2011, Yzuel was honored by UAB with an award recognizing her academic work at the university and her work as a woman in the optics field.
