SPIE Fellow and Past President Brian Thompson, University of Rochester provost emeritus, was named 2011 Engineer of the Year by the Rochester Engineering Society (RES) on 28 April.
Thompson, editor of the journal Optical Engineering throughout most of the 1990s, has been deeply involved with SPIE governance, publishing programs, and conferences for many years.
Among the awards he has received from SPIE are the Gold Medal of the Society, the Rudolf Kingslake Award for an outstanding journal article, the Chandra S. Vikram Award in Optical Metrology, the President's Award, and the Director's Award.
