Sune Svanberg receives China Friendship Award 07 October 2013SPIE member Sune Svanberg of Lund University (Sweden) has been named one of 50 recipients of the Chinese government's Friendship Award.
Svanberg has collaborated with Chinese students and researchers on laser spectroscopy research since 1980. Along with his wife, former SPIE President Katarina Svanberg, he is a part-time professor at South China Normal University in Guangzhou (Canton) where the Svanbergs are helping to create a new photonics research center. Svanberg is also honorary professor at Zhejiang University, Jilin University and at HIT-Harbin, China, and was named an "Einstein Professor" of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2006. Svanberg is a senior professor of physics at Lund University and former director of the Lund Laser Center. He is the co-author of more than 600 scientific papers, with more than 30 patents and patent applications. He is a member of the Royal Academy of Sciences, and was a member of its Nobel Committee for Physics for 10 years, including two years as chairman. The award was presented by China's Premier Li in the Great Hall of the People in Beijing. Since its establishment in 1991, 50 experts in a wide range of fields from science to the arts have received the award each year as part of the celebration of the National Day of the People's Republic of China on 1 October. |
The award recognizes "foreign experts who have made outstanding contributions to the country's economic and social progress."
