SPIE President-Elect Toyohiko Yatagai (above) of Utsunomiya University and other SPIE Fellows and Members participated in the Optics and Photonics International Congress (OPIC) and Exhibition (OPIE) 2014 in Yokohama in April.

Professor Yatagai assisted in the opening ceremony of the exhibition, one of the largest for optics and photonics in Asia, and represented SPIE as the international partner for OPIC and cosponsor for several conferences.

SPIE Fellow Andreas Ostendorf (Ruhr-Universität Bochum), Kenichi Iga (Tokyo Institute of Technology) and Robert Byer (Stanford University), were co-chairs of OPIC2014, and each gave a keynote talk. The organizing committee chair was Sadao Nakai (Osaka University), president of the Laser Society of Japan.

The Laser Ignition Conference (LIC) 2014, organized by SPIE Fellow Takunori Taira, was one of nine conferences under the OPIC umbrella event. The LIC focuses on the use of lasers to improve the performance of combustion engines and drew an international audience of more than 800 participants.

With reported attendance of over 18,000 visitors, OPIE is a leading international exhibition on optics and photonics. In 2011, the organizers launched OPIC, the international congress of technical conferences on laser damage, laser processing, synchrotron radiation, and related topics.

The 2015 OPIE/OPIC events are scheduled in April. SPIE will continue to play a central role in organizing and supporting the congress.

In addition, the Asia Pacific Laser Symposium (APLS) 2014 was co-located with OPIC. The symposium rotates between Korea, China and Japan and brings together scientists from the laser field.

Jeong-Weon Wu (Ewha Womans University), current president of the Optical Society of Korea and a member of SPIE, announced that APLS will take place in Korea in 2015.
