SPIE Member Marlan Scully, Princeton Univ. and Texas A&M Univ., has been awarded the Herbert-Walther-Preis for 2011, in recognition of his work in quantum optics.
Scully was a key figure in the development of the first description of a laser based on quantum theory, and contributed important work to the theory behind the free-electron laser, said the the German Physical Society (DPG) announcement of the award.
Scully has authored more than 30 papers published in SPIE Proceedings and the Journal of Biomedical Optics, including a paper on "Coherence in quantum photo-cell: effect of Fano coupling," to be presented at SPIE Photonics West in January.
The Herbert-Walther-Preis is jointly presented by DPG and the Optical Society of America.
