SPIE member Pekka Savolainen has been appointed director of the Optoelectronics Research Centre (ORC) at Tampere University of Technology, Finland.
Savolainen is an ORC graduate with a doctorate in semiconductor physics, and has over 17 years of experience in the field of semiconductor physics and laser technology, including technical director at ORC’s spin-off company Modulight Ltd., founded in 2000. He was development director of ORC for the past year.
Savolainen “knows the history of ORC and has experience in optoelectronics and has created an international network with industry,” says retiring director Markus Pessa. “This will help him utilize different funding mechanisms for high-tech research and guide ORC.”
Pessa, founder and long-term director of ORC, will retire in November 2009. Pessa is known for his efforts to promote growth of the laser industry in Finland, and has presented on his work at several SPIE Europe conferences.
“Prof. Pessa is called ‘Mr. Laser’ in Finland, and under his guidance ORC is now the leading semiconductor and fiber optics research centre in Finland,” says Savolainen. Research conducted at ORC has significantly contributed to the development of the molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) method. MBE is the most precise known method of manufacturing thin films.
