In memoriam: Nicholas J. Phillips

23 June 2009

Nicholas J. Phillips, Emeritus Professor in Physics at Loughborough University and Emeritus Professor at Glyndwr University, Wrexham, died at his home on 23 May 2009. Internationally recognized as one of the world's leading holographic scientists, he is survived by his wife Kathryn and children Alexander and Antonia.

"On behalf of me and the whole holographic community we all miss Nick tremendously; an excellent scientist, researcher, teacher and a very friendly and honest person," said colleague and SPIE Fellow Hans I. Bjelkhagen, Centre for Modern Optics, Glyndwr University.

Fellow colleague Mike Medora said, "Waiting for the next useful pronouncement or recipe from Nick reminded me of how in the early 60's we would rush to hear the latest Beatles record. It was that important at the time."
