SPIE Fellow Paras Prasad, SUNY (State University of New York) Distinguished Professor at the University at Buffalo (UB), has been chosen as one of two recipients for this year's UB President's Medal. The medal, first presented in 1990, is given in recognition of outstanding scholarly achievements, humanitarian acts, and major contributions in the development of the university.
Prasad, SUNY Distinguished Professor of Chemistry, Physics, Medicine, and Electrical Engineering, specializes in the preparation, processing, and theoretical modeling of nanostructured photonic materials, biophotonics, and nonlinear processes.
Prasad is also the recipient of the 2016 SPIE Gold Medal of the Society, and an organizer of SPIE conferences in nanophotonics and nanoscale materials. He is a long-time SPIE course instructor and has published numerous journal and proceedings papers with SPIE.
Prasad was named among the top 50 science and technology leaders by Scientific American in 2005 and has published over 750 scientific papers, four monographs, eight edited books and numerous patents.
Prasad also holds the Samuel P. Capen Chair of chemistry and is the founder and director of the multidisciplinary Institute for Lasers, Photonics, and Biophotonics (ILPB), both at UB. Established in 1999, the ILPB brings together a multidisciplinary faculty from medicine, engineering, physics, and chemistry to focus on research and development involving photonics.
The UB President's Medal will be presented during the university's commencement 15 May.
