Aydogan Ozcan group builds $3 microscope that plugs into cell phones

Aydogan OzcanA biomedical engineering group at Univ. of California, Los Angeles, led by professor Aydogan Ozcan has built a digital micrscope that can plug into a cell phone and performs basic medical diagnostics.

The device uses no lenses, and applies algorigthms to extract more information from images, reports an article in Technology Review, published by MIT.

Ozcan wrote a recent SPIE Newsroom article on lensfree on-chip technology and its applications for improving point-of-care diagnostics and value in both develeoped and developing areas of the world.

Ozcan is a Member of SPIE, and has published nearly two dozen papers with SPIE, most recently on lensless digital holography for telemedicine the SPIE Defense, Security, and Sensing in April, and has served on several conference program committees.
