Jacobus "Jim" Oschmann

photo of Jim OschmannSPIE Fellow and former SPIE Board member Jacobus "Jim" Oschmann of Ball Aerospace will be awarded the University of Arizona College of Optical Sciences' Alumnus of the Year Award on 7 November. The ceremony will be held during 100th anniversary of the first University of Arizona homecoming.

Vice president and general manager of the Civil Space and Technology strategic business unit at Ball Aerospace & Technologies Corp., Oschmann has over 20 publications with SPIE and was a symposium chair of SPIE Astronomical Telescopes and Instrumentation 2006.

Oschmann has been on various James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) advisory panels for NASA and was a co-chair for the SPIE conference on optical, infrared and millimeter space telescopes at SPIE Astronomical Telescopes and Instrumentation 2014. The conference proceedings contains copious information on the status of JWST, which is on track for launch in 2018.

Prior to joining Ball Aerospace in 2004 as a chief engineer, Oschmann received a bachelor's degree in optics from University of Rochester and master's degrees in Optical Sciences and Business Administration from University of Arizona.

Oschmann and his wife, Michelle Oschmann, are actively involved with the College of Optical Sciences, which is celebrating 50 years of optical science at UA this year, and have provided a scholarship for University of Arizona graduate students in optical sciences.
