SPIE Vice President Robert Lieberman shares a tribute to optical fiber sensors pioneer Alan Rogers at OFS23.
The 23rd International Conference on Optical Fiber Sensor (OFS23) attracted more than 500 attendees in Santander, Spain, 2-6 June. The conference covers all aspects related to sensing using light, particularly fiber optic and guided-wave sensing devices, systems, and techniques for research and applications in industrial, life sciences, medical, oil, gas, civil engineering, and defense industries.
During an awards ceremony, SPIE Past President Brian Culshaw (Univeristy of Strathclyde) received the OFS23 Lifetime Achievements Award in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the worldwide advance of knowledge in the fiber optic sensing field. Culshaw serves on conference committees for SPIE Sensing Technology + Applications 2015 and SPIE Smart Structures/NDE 2015. Culshaw's award was presented by General Director of the Universities of the Cantabria Government Marta Guijarro.
SPIE Vice President Robert Lieberman (Intelligent Optical Systems) presented Student Best Paper Awards on behalf of SPIE in two categories.
SPIE Member Abian Socorro (Universidad Pública de Navarra ) was the recipient in Chemical, Environmental, Biological and Medical Sensors for "Celiac disease biodetection using lossy-mode resonances generated in tapered single-mode optical fibers."
Guei-Ru Lin (Feng Chia University) was the recipient in New Concepts, Fibers, Devices and Subsystems for Photonic Sensing; Smart Materials, Sensors, and Structures including SHM Systems; Micro and Nano-structured Fiber Sensors for "A novel refractive index sensor based on an induced micro-structure fiber."
