Technique developed by SPIE researchers will be used in organic materials manufacture

A new photolithography technique developed by SPIE researchers will be used by a company planning to sell materials for making organic elecronics using silicon manufacturing infrastructure.

Using a photolithography technique licensed by Christopher Ober and George Malliaras of Cornell Univ., an Ithaca, New York, company called Orthogonal is developing materials that will allow organic electronics to be manufactured on the equipment used to make silicon electronics. The technique would be used in manufacture of energy-efficient, lightweight, and flexible solar cells and computer displays, according to an article in the MIT Technology Review.

Malliaras has chaired a conference on Organic Semiconductors in Sensors and Bioelectronics at SPIE Optics and Photonics, and served on the program committee for several other SPIE conferences. Both Malliaras and Ober have authored numerous papers for SPIE, and, with John DeFranco, will present a paper on "Orthogonal lithography" at SPIE Advanced Lithography in San Jose, California, in February 2010. DeFranco is CTO of Orthogonal and a member of SPIE.
