SPIE Fellow and Past President MJ Soileau has been named an ‘Industry Beacon’ by Photonics Spectra and the editorial staff of Photonics Media. Soileau is vice president for the Office of Research and Commercialization at the University of Central Florida (UCF) and University Distinguished Professor of Optics and Photonics, ECE and Physics at UCF’s College of Optics and Photonics (CREOL).

The honor recognizes those in the photonics and optics industry whose outstanding contributions have advanced light-based technologies in the scientific, business, academic, and consumer communities. Soileau was honored for his leading role in the creation of the CREOL as well as his many technical and scientific papers. Additionally, under his leadership, research funding for UCF's Office of Research and Commercialization increased from $36.6 million in 1998 to $1.2 billion since 2000.

Soileau served as president of SPIE in 1997, has chaired several governance and conference committees, and authored dozens of papers for SPIE publications. He has been the recipient of numerous awards, including the SPIE Gold Medal in 2008 and the Directors' Award in 1999. He was made Fellow of the Society in 1988.
