SPIE Fellow Miles Padgett accepted the title of Honorary Professor from the Huazhong University of Science and Technology Monday, 3 November in Wuhan, China. Padgett was in Wuhan to deliver his plenary speech on Optical Angular Momentum at the Asia Communications and Photonics, an event sponsored by SPIE.

Padgett holds the Kelvin Chair of Natural Philosophy in the School of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Glasgow. He heads a 15-person team covering a wide spectrum from blue-sky research to applied instrument development. The group’s work has led to the fundamental understanding of light's momentum.

Padgett is very active within the SPIE community having presented dozens of times at several SPIE events, most recently delivering a Hot Topics talk on single-photon ghost-imaging with a camera at SPIE Photonics Europe 2016. For his technical achievements and continued involvement in the Society, he was promoted to Fellow of the Society by SPIE in 2013.
