The ICO/ICTP Gallieno Denardo Award for 2010 has been awarded to Cleber Renato Mendonça, Universidade de Sao Paulo - Instituto de Fisica de Sao Carlos, Brazil, for "the development of novel methods and procedures of nonlinear optics, in particular the use of femtosecond pulses and femtosecond laser microfabrication in polymers for investigating nonlinear optical properties of organic compounds, and for establishing effective interdisciplinary collaborations within Brazil."
The award is made each year by ICO (International Commission for Optics) and ICTP (the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics, Trieste) to a young researcher who is active in research and has contributed to the promotion of research activities in optics in his or her own or another developing country. The award includes a cash prize from ICO, support for attending a three-week-long ICTP college, and an opportunity to give a seminar at ICTP.
Mendonça will be presenting a paper at the 2011 SPIE Photonics West titled, "Broadband third-harmonic generation on interfaces using femtosecond pulses," during the popular LASE conference.
SPIE is a member of the ICO, and a supporter of and contributor to the ICTP.
Instructions for nomination applications are at www.ico-optics.org/awards.html. Deadline for 2011 award is 10 December 2010.
