Claire Max, professor of astronomy and astrophysics at University of California, Santa Cruz, has been awarded Princeton University's James Madison Medal.
Princeton University has recognized Dr. Claire Max with its James Madison Medal. The Madison Medal is named for the fourth president of the United States and the person many consider Princeton's first graduate student. It is presented each year by the University to an alumnus or alumna of the Graduate School who has had a distinguished career, advanced the cause of graduate education or achieved an outstanding record of public service.
Max's research focuses on astronomical applications of adaptive optics and she is active in the development of advanced adaptive optics systems for large current and future ground-based telescopes. A member of SPIE, Max served as chair of the conference on Adaptive Optics Systems at the SPIE Astronomical Telescopes and Instrumentation 2008 (see http://spie.org/as). She is author or coauthor of more than 35 papers in SPIE conferences since 1994.
