'María Josefa Yzuel' building in the Walqa Technology Park

20 November 2018

As part of the Week of Science this November, the Aragon government in Spain decided to name a building at their university in the Walqa Technology Park after SPIE Fellow and 2009 SPIE President María Josefa Yzuel. Members from SEDOPTICA and the Grupo de Mujeres en Física de la Real Sociedad Española de Física (RSEF) were on hand at the celebration unveiling the name of the building. The dedication from the event reads:

"On November 15, the Walqa Technology Park, in Huesca, gave a building the name of our beloved teacher María Josefa Yzuel, a Jacetana scientist and the first woman with a tenured position in a university in the area of physics. The Government of Aragon has wanted to give value to the talent of women in history, assigning one of its buildings the name of a scientist. Professor Yzuel has been elected with more than a thousand votes. The initiative has been presented in the celebration of the Week of Science in an informative breakfast about Women in Science and Technology.

From the Grupo de Mujeres en Física de la Real Sociedad Española de Física and from SEDOPTICA, we very much welcome this decision and congratulate Professor Yzuel. Her achievements have opened the way and offer a model for many women researchers to follow. Our most sincere congratulations."
