John Rogers wins Lemelson-MIT Prize; Guoan Zheng and Benjamin Clough honored with Collegiate Student awards

SPIE Member John Rogers, the Lee J. Flory-Founder Chair professor of engineering at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, has won the 2011 Lemelson-MIT Prize, MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) announced this week. The prize was awarded in part because his research has helped create products and companies across disciplines in areas like health, fiber optics, semiconductor manufacturing and solar power, the MIT announcement said.

Rogers has authored approximately 20 papers for SPIE conference proceedings, and has served on numerous SPIE conference committees including for the upcoming Advanced Fabrication Technologies for Micro/Nano Optics and Photonics at SPIE Photonics West 2012.

In March, SPIE Members Guoan Zheng (California Institute of Technology) and Benjamin Clough (Rensselaer Institute of Technology) were honored with Lemelson-MIT Collegiate Student Prizes.

Zheng was honored for developing an on-chip, inexpensive microscopy imaging technology with potential applications such as screening for blood-borne diseases.

Clough was honored for demonstrating a new technique using sound waves to boost the distance form which researchers can use terahertz spectroscopy to remotely detect dangerous materials.
