John Dudley receives President's Medal from the Institute of Physics 01 December 2016
SPIE Member John Dudley, former president of the European Physical Society and a professor of physics at the FEMTO-ST Institute and at the Université de Franche-Comté, was awarded the President’s Medal by the Institute of Physics (IOP). IOP President Roy Sambles may award a President's Medal twice during his term of office at his own discretion. In an address at the IOP's annual Awards Dinner on 29 November, he said he had chosen Dudley "not so much for the physics he did, but for the phenomenal effort he put into promoting worldwide public awareness of the importance of physics by initiating and driving the International Year of Light, a global year of science outreach, reaching millions of people in more than 100 countries." Dudley served as chair of the international steering committee for the International Year of Light and Light-based Technologies 2015. Dudley has published over 160 papers and delivered over 120 invited talks at major conferences, and has won several awards and fellowships, including the 2014 SPIE President's Award. He is regular contributor to SPIE events having most recently served as conference chair for Real-time Measurements, Rogue Events, and Emerging Applications at Photonics West 2016.
