Masanori Iye receives Japan Medal with Purple Ribbon

SPIE Member Masanori Iye earlier this month was decorated with the Japanese Medal with Purple Ribbon (Shiju Houshou) in recognition of  cutting-edge research in astronomy and numerous contributions to the academic world during his career.

Iye is Director of the TMT (Thirty Meter Telescope) Project Office of the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan (NAOJ) and a professor at both the Subaru Telescope and at the Optical and Infrared Astronomy Division of NAOJ.

Following the presentation ceremony, Iye and other recipients were congratulated by Imperial Prince Fumihito during a reception at the Imperial Palace.

Iye has been very active in the SPIE Astronomical Telescopes and Instrumentation symposium, having served twice as Symposium Chair and  as chair and committee member for numerous conferences. He is the author of more than 70 papers published in the SPIE Digital Library.
