Bruce Hasegawa, 57, Director of the Physics Research Laboratory and Professor in Residence in the Department of Radiology at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), died 22 May 2008 after suffering a massive stroke. Prof. Hasegawa also had faculty appointments in the Nuclear Engineering Department at the University of California, Berkeley (UCB) and the joint Bioengineering Graduate Group at UCSF and UCB.
Prof. Hasegawa was best known as the inventor of multimodality medical imaging techniques, especially SPECT/CT, and contributed significantly to the field of CT and SPECT through many well-cited publications. Besides being an internationally recognized research scientist, he was a devoted and well-regarded teacher of graduate students and mentor of young scientists in medical imaging.
"Bruce was kind, generous, and well-liked by his peers, and at the same time commanded great respect from them for his technological knowledge and accomplishments," said Prof. Benjamin Tsui of Johns Hopkins University, a long-time collaborator of Prof. Hasegawa. "His untimely death touches many of his professional colleagues, friends, and students worldwide. He will be greatly missed."
Prof. Hasegawa served on the program committee for the SPIE Optics and Photonics symposium for several years, and contributed more than 30 papers for conferences at that symposium and the SPIE Medical Imaging symposium. This year, he had been a member of the program committee for the conference on Penetrating Radiation Systems and Applications IX to be held at the upcoming Optics and Photonics symposium, and was a keynote speaker for the conference on Physics of Medical Imaging at the Medical Imaging symposium in February.
