SPIE Member Graeme Malcolm, founder and CEO of SPIE Corporate Member M Squared Lasers, received the 2016 Katharine Burr Blodgett Medal and Prize from the Institute of Physics (IOP) at their award ceremony 29 November.

The former Swan Medal and Prize was renamed by IOP this year as the Katharine Burr Blodgett Medal and Prize, in honor of the award-winning research scientist. In 1926, Blodgett was the first woman to gain a PhD in physics from the University of Cambridge, and went on to create several inventions including "invisible" glass. The award acknowledges industrial or commercial applications of physics. Malcolm was recognized for his role in founding M Squared Lasers, and his contribution to the design and manufacture of transformative award-winning photonics products.

Malcolm has authored several papers and is a frequent participant in SPIE events as a speaker and panel member. He was a presenter at the 2016 PRISM Awards at Photonics West. His company, M Squared Lasers, is also a regular exhibitor at the Photonics West BiOS exhibition.
