Topics from journal impact factors to world-class photonics innovation were discussed in meetings with SPIE Fellows, Student Chapter Members, and other colleagues in visits by SPIE President-Elect Glenn Boreman (University of North Carolina at Charlotte) in Poland last month.

In Warsaw, Boreman visited the Military University of Technology, Vigo Systems S.A., and the Warsaw University of Technology.

At MUT, Boreman met with SPIE Fellow Antoni Rogalski, who serves on the advisory board of Photonics Letters of Poland, published by the Photonics Society of Poland with support from SPIE. The open-access journal recently has been listed with major databases, and is on track toward evaluation for an impact factor.

Boreman also met with members of the SPIE MUT Student Chapter.

At Vigo Systems, Boreman was hosted by Adam Piotrowski, director and son of the firm's founder, on a tour of the facility for world-class infrared sensor development for niche applications.

At WUT, Boreman was given a tour of labs engaged in fiber sensing by SPIE Member and Dean Miroslaw Karpierz, and attended a luncheon for SPIE Fellows and PSP members.

Traveling to Gdansk, Boreman presented a well-received talk offering career advice at the start of OPTO 2016, a three-day gathering of students from Poland and Finland, held in the electrical engineering department of Gdansk University of Technology. The SPIE GUT Student Chapter was among several organizers of the event.

Boreman reported that students expressed thanks for scholarship support from SPIE that has allowed travel to other universities in the region for collaboration, and opportunity to attend SPIE Optics and Photonics and Photonics West where they can become acquainted with the wider photonics community.
