Nader Engheta awarded Balthasar van der Pol Gold Medal

SPIE Fellow Nader Engheta, professor of Electrical and Systems Engineering Science at the University of Pennsylvania, has been awarded the Balthasar van der Pol Gold Medal by the International Union of Radio Science (USRI) "for groundbreaking contributions and innovations in electromagnetic theory and applications of composite materials, metamaterials and nanoscale optics, bio-inspired imaging and sensing, and material-based optical nanocircuitry." The award ceremony was in Beijing on 17 August. The Balthasar van der Pol medal is one of the highest awards USRI gives and is awarded once every three years to outstanding scientists for career achievements that have significantly contributed to USRI. The award honors Dutch physicist Balthasar van der Pol, who studied experimental physics and built electronic circuit models of the heart. Engheta has published numerous journal papers and conference articles with SPIE, most recently authoring a paper on "Transparent conductive oxides as an emerging platform for Si-compatible plasmonics and active metamaterials," presented at SPIE Optics + Photonics 2014 in San Diego, California.
