Nicoleta Dragomir will use SPIE outreach grant to outfit schools with optics equipment

25 May 2012

SPIE Nicoleta Dragomir JPEGMember Nicoleta Dragomir (pictured in her lab, at right), a researcher at Victoria University School of Biomedical and Health Sciences, will use a $5,000 SPIE education outreach grant to supply biophotonics equipment to five  schools in regional Victoria.

She plans to provide kits including equipment such as digital microscopes, equipment to build telescopes, Fresnel lenses, mini-lasers, prisms, polarizers, and and diffraction gratings, and said she has purposely chosen schools away from central Melbourne so that regional kids can have a go at science.

"It's a great opportunity for students to get a feel for how extraordinary science can be," she said. "Whether or not it makes them think about a career in science it eliminates that fear of high technology."
