Dean Kamen teams up with Black Eyed Peas singer for STEM education television special

12 August 2011

Inventor Dean Kamen, featured in the April 2011 issue of SPIE Professional magazine, has teamed up with Black Eyed Peas front man, entrepreneur, and technology wizard will.i.am for "i.am FIRST -- Science is Rock and Roll," a one-hour special promoting education, science and technology.

The show will air Sunday 14 August at 7 p.m. Eastern Time on ABC.

Kamen is the founder of the FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Championship, a worldwide science and robotics K-12 competition that celebrates technology. His company, DEKA Research & Development, employs photonics technology in inventions such as a prosthetic arm and an insulin pump for diabetes treatment.

The show will feature live performances by The Black Eyed Peas and Willow Smith, as well as special appearances from a host of high-profile celebrities speaking out to support STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) education.
