SPIE President-Elect Kevin Harding of GE Global Research, USA, and CEO Eugene Arthurs were among U.S. science and mathematics leaders attending the semiannual meeting of the Council of Scientific Society Presidents (CSSP) in Washington, DC, 1-3 December.
Presenters included Nobelist Thomas Cech, President of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute; Arden Bement, Director, National Science Foundation; National Medal of Science winner Nina Fedoroff, State Department; John H. Marburger III, Director, Office of Science and Technology Policy, Executive Office; and others.
A reception with top science and government leaders included guest-of-honor Congressman Bart Gordon (D-TN), Chair of the House Committee on Science and Technology.
CSSP is an organization of presidents, presidents-elect, and recent past presidents of about 60 scientific federations and societies whose combined membership numbers well over 1.4 million scientists and science educators. CSSP's goal is to foster and promote wise science policy and provide a forum for open, substantive exchanges on emerging scientific issues.
