Juan Carlos Miñano honored with A.E. Conrady Award

25 February 2010

Juan Carlos Miñano, Universidad Politecnica de Madrid, Madrid, Spain, is the 2010 recipient of the A.E. Conrady Award in recognition of his exceptional contributions in developing new design methods and devices in Nonimaging Optics.

"His most impressive contributions for me have been in the design principles he has laid out for Non-Imaging optical systems, first in his SPIE publications, but most recently in his book entitled "Non-Imaging Optics" with Roland Winston and Pablo Benitez," said David G. Pelka, President, InteLED Corporation, Inc. "This is truly a seminal publication for the field, and codifies many design principles for scientists and engineers for LED lighting systems, LED backlights for LCD displays, as well as free-space telecommunication and concentrating photo-voltaic applications."

The contributions of Juan C. Miñano in Nonimaging Optics have gone much further than the development of design theory: he has promoted the use of his state of the art designs and methods to the design of practical devices in multiple applications, said Pablo Benitez, Universidad Politecnica de Madrid. "At present, Juan C. Miñano is leading the team that is developing the most advanced optical designs in Nonimaging Optics: the free-form Kohler integration array optics."

Miñano is a Member of the Society and has authored numerous papers and presentations for SPIE meetings. He's authored 34 publications in referred journals of physics, solar energy and engineering, 12 book chapters, over 113 publications in conference proceedings and holds 26 foreign and US patents.

The A. E. Conrady Award is given annually in recognition of exceptional contributions in design, construction, and testing of optical systems and instrumentation. The recognition of this award is based on developments of new equipment, techniques, and applications for designing, testing, analyzing, and/or evaluating optical systems, components, and theories. $2,000.00 honorarium is sponsored by Optical Research Associates.

SPIE presents several yearly awards that recognize outstanding individual and team technical accomplishments and meritorious service to the Society. SPIE urges you to nominate a colleague for his or her outstanding achievements. Nominations may be made through October 1 of any given year and are considered active for three years from the submission date. Visit SPIE.org/x1164.xml for instructions and nomination forms.

SPIE the international society for optics and photonics was founded in 1955 to advance light-based technologies. Serving more than 188,000 constituents from 138 countries, the Society advances emerging technologies through interdisciplinary information exchange, continuing education, publications, patent precedent, and career and professional growth. SPIE annually organizes and sponsors approximately 25 major technical forums, exhibitions, and education programs in North America, Europe, Asia, and the South Pacific, and supports scholarships, grants, and other education programs around the world.
