SPIE Fellows James Burge and Robert Parks of the University of Arizona have won a stimulus grant from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) to adapt highly precise tools used to build and test telescope mirros for use by the nation's manufacturers. The techniques will be applied in manufacturing microchips, solar collectors, turbine blades, cell-phone cameras, and auto parts.
Burge has published more than 140 papers and served on numerous conference program committees for SPIE events. He is an author of 10 papers to be presented at SPIE Astronomical Telescopes and Instrumentation in June and one at SPIE Optics and Photonics in August.
Parks has published nearly 30 papers with SPIE, and is on the conference program committee for Optical System Alignment, Tolerancing, and Verification at SPIE Optics and Photonics.
