SPIE Member Alfredo Dubra Suarez and the Medical College of Wisconsin received a four-year grant to support research of diseases that affect the retina and optic nerves from Research to Prevent Blindness. The grant will cover research to improve and accelerate the development of new therapies to improve early diagnosis of eye disease.
The RPB award will support optics, computer, and software engineers to make new instruments that are more applicable in clinics. Dubra's research of ophthalmic adaptive optics will study adaptive optics in order to take high-resolution image that include visualization of all individual cells in eyes. This process could lead to analysis of diseases that impact the eye such as multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, and glaucoma.
Dubra has published seven papers on similar topics in the SPIE Digital Library. His most recent "Low Bandwidth eye tracker for scanning laser ophthalmoscopy" will be presented at SPIE Medical Imaging 2012.
