Alexander Balandin finds a more effective graphene atom

SPIE Fellow Alexander Balandin has contributed research to a newly found graphene -- an atom-thick layer of carbon -- that is 60 percent more effective than normal graphene.

This type of graphene can lead to impacts in smaller devices, where overheating is a problem, by making them more powerful. By using a laser to heat graphene, researchers found that this type of graphene is better than any other material at dissipating heat. These findings can lead to exceptional changes in electronics, since graphene plays a role in how efficiently heat is transferred.

Balandin has authored 17 conference presentations for SPIE including SPIE Optics + Photonics where he was the session chair for "Devices and Applications."
