SPIE and CLP Launching Advanced Photonics Journal

New open access journal covers high-impact advances in fundamental and applied research in optics and photonics

BELLINGHAM, Washington, USA, and Cardiff, UK - SPIE, the international society for optics and photonics, and Chinese Laser Press (CLP), sponsored by Shanghai Institute of Optics and Fine Mechanics and the Chinese Optical Society, have entered into a partnership for a new journal, Advanced Photonics. This will be a highly selective, open access, international journal, publishing innovative fundamental and applied research in optics, photonics, and related fields.

Advanced Photonics will feature top-quality original papers, letters, and review articles, reflecting significant advances and breakthroughs in theoretical and experimental research, and promising novel applications. The journal will include news and commentaries covering scientific and technological discoveries, breakthroughs, and achievements.

Maryellen Giger, 2018 SPIE President, noted: "I am pleased that SPIE and CLP are launching Advanced Photonics together. SPIE and CLP provide compatible conferences, publications, and continuing education to the worldwide photonics research community. This journal, reporting on important research from around the world, will spotlight significant new aspects of the wide-ranging field of photonics. Advanced Photonics will be a must-read for researchers in basic and applied photonics, and its online, open access model will enable everyone to read its research and review articles, and commentaries."

Lydia Yang, General Manager of CLP, stated: "CLP and SPIE are known for meeting the needs of the optics and photonics community through conferences and journals. Advanced Photonics will benefit the community with high-impact and high-profile research using the advantages of academic influence from both sides. We look forward to working with SPIE to make the journal an international academic forum for the development of science and technology in optics and photonics."

Anatoly Zayats, Professor of Experimental Physics and Head, Photonics and Nanotechnology Group, at King's College London, UK, and Yuan Xiao-Cong (Larry), Changjiang Scholar Professor and Director of the Nanophotonics Research Center, at Shenzhen University, China, are Co-Editors-in-Chief. Both are distinguished researchers and SPIE Fellows.

Yuan Xiao-Cong defined the journal's focus: "Advanced Photonics is devoted to the emerging fields of optical science and technologically practical applications of optics. The journal will cover the new and fast growing areas in optics and photonics while promoting high-quality publications and high-impact research around the world."

Anatoly Zayats stated their goals: "We aim to make Advanced Photonics a trusted source of groundbreaking research in optics and optical technologies. With the benefits provided by open access, we hope the journal will be on a reading list of all researchers interested in new trends in photonic sciences."

Advanced Photonics seeks high-quality, high-impact articles across the entire spectrum of optics, photonics, and related fields with emphasis on the following acceptance criteria:

  • New concepts in terms of fundamental research with great impact and significance 
  • State-of-the-art technologies in terms of novel methods for important applications
  • Reviews of recent major advances and discoveries and state-of-the-art benchmarking

Advanced Photonics will cover the following research areas:

  • Photonic devices and systems for communications
  • Photonics for clean energy
  • Photonics in chemistry, biology, and medicine
  • Optical imaging, metrology, and sensors
  • Photonics for data storage, data manipulation, and displays
  • Materials, artificial materials, and nanostructures for photonics 
  • Photonics in quantum technologies
  • Nonlinear and ultrafast optics
  • Optoelectronics and optical information processing
  • Optical manipulation techniques, optomechanics, and optofluidics

Researchers may submit manuscripts beginning in spring 2018. Information on submissions and volunteering to be a reviewer is available at Advanced Photonics.

SPIE will publish Advanced Photonics on the SPIE Digital Library, beginning with Volume 1, Issue 1 in January 2019. Articles will be posted as they are reviewed, accepted, copyedited, and typeset, starting in late 2018. The journal will also be available on CLP's China Optical Journal Network. All articles will be open access (CC BY) with the article publication charge (APC) waived in the first year.
