SPIE Newsroom wins award for editorial content

BELLINGHAM, WA, USA - 16 June 2008 - SPIE Newsroom, the news and technical research website of SPIE, is the recipient of a 2008 EXCEL Award from the Society of National Association Publications (SNAP). The Newsroom site was recognized in the Editorial Content category for the second year in a row, receiving a Silver award at a ceremony on June 10 in Washington, DC.

The website publishes short technical articles, industry and Society news, and product information from the world of photonics. Multimedia content includes video interviews with prominent researchers. Topics covered by SPIE Newsroom are spread across 13 technical areas, from the more traditional Optical Design and Engineering or Lasers and Sources to rapidly evolving fields such as Illumination and Displays or Solar and Alternative Energy. Users can subscribe to RSS feeds or monthly E-Alerts to be notified of the latest articles posted under each topic.

Technical articles are written by the people performing the actual research, and provide a snapshot of developments in their respective areas. New material is added to the site daily. The SPIE Newsroom website was launched in early 2006.

"We are gratified that SNAP has again recognized the SPIE Newsroom as an important provider of technical content online," said Eugene Arthurs, CEO of SPIE. "The vision of the Newsroom was to provide a comprehensive overview of the diverse fields of photonics, and this honor confirms that we are on track to achieving that goal. We're grateful to our constituents who have shared their work to make the Newsroom what it is."
