SeTBio Sensing Technologies for Biomaterial, Food, and Agriculture

BELLINGHAM, Washington -- Advancements in photonics technologies to measure food safety and increase agricultural productivity will be reported at a new conference at the Pacifico Yokohama in Japan next April.

Sponsored by SPIE, the international society for optics and photonics, with the support of several other academic societies and associations, the International Conference on Sensing Technologies for Biomaterial, Food, and Agriculture (SeTBio 2013) will be held 23-26 April 2013 as part of the Optics and Photonics International Congress and Exhibition (OPIC). OPIC, which attracted more than 10,000 attendees in 2012, is the only annual international event in Japan on optics and photonics that supports both science and industry. It includes technical conferences as well as an exhibition, with English as the primary language.

Light is an essential component for bio-production in agriculture, livestock farming, and aquaculture, especially for enhancing productivity and quality, SeTBio organizers noted. Light with specific properties plays important roles in sensors for biomaterials: Red, green, and blue light applications are used to increase plant production, while photonics sensors measuring the spectrum from x-ray to THz waves are used in advanced inspection systems.

Chaired by Naoshi Kondo from the Kyoto University Graduate School of Agriculture, SeTBio 2013 topics will include LED and other lighting technologies, environmental controls to promote agricultural growth, remote sensing for crop management, photonic sensors for food inspection, biosensing for livestock and aquaculture, soil sensors, and light-based analysis of biomaterials.

Abstract submissions are being accepted through 20 December. Visit www.spie.org/setbio for complete information.

SeTBio conference proceedings will be published individually in the SPIE Digital Library as soon as approved after the meeting, and will also be available in print and digital collections.

SPIE is the international society for optics and photonics, a not-for-profit organization founded in 1955 to advance light-based technologies. The Society serves nearly 225,000 constituents from approximately 150 countries, offering conferences, continuing education, books, journals, and a digital library in support of interdisciplinary information exchange, professional growth, and patent precedent. SPIE provided over $2.7 million in support of education and outreach programs in 2011.
