The 2007 SPIE Poland Chapter Maksymilian Pluta Award was granted to Professor Wieslaw Wolinski for "significant contribution to the development of laser technology."
Wolinski is a leading authority in Poland on lasers and optoelectronic devices. He received his MSc, PhD and DSc from Warsaw University of Technology in 1955, 1964 and 1968, respectively. He became professor in 1975. From 1978 to 1981 he was a head of the Institute of Microelectronics and Optoelectronics of the Faculty of Electronics and Information Technology of WUT. Until his retirement in 1999 he served as a head of the Optoelectronics Division of the same institute.
In 1991 he was elected a Corresponding Member of the Polish Academy of Sciences (PASci). Since 1991 he has been a chair of the Polish Optoelectronics Committee of the Association of Polish Electrical Engineers, and from 1999 to 2007 he has served as chair of the Committee on Electronics and Telecommunication of PASci. In 1987, he was instrumental in the establishment of the Polish Chapter of SPIE, and he has been a member since then.
The award is named for Maksymilian Pluta, the founder and long-time chair of the chapter, who died in 2002.
