Honorees hail from 18 countries, multiple disciplines

BELLINGHAM, Washington, USA, and CARDIFF, UK -- Seventy-six members of SPIE, the international society for optics and photonics, have been named Fellows of the Society this year. The honor recognizes their significant scientific and technical contributions in the multidisciplinary fields of optics, photonics, and imaging as well as their service to the Society and the greater community.
The new SPIE Fellows are now among more than 1,000 who have been named since the Society was founded in 1955.
"The 2014 Fellows exemplify the full diversity of the photonics community, and represent 18 different countries on 5 continents," said SPIE Fellows Committee chair Majid Rabbani, Eastman Distinguished Fellow and technology manager at Eastman Kodak Research Labs, and adjunct associate professor at the Rochester Institute of Technology. "Their affiliations encompass the full range of academia, industry, and government labs and institutes, with expertise spanning astronomy, biomedicine, electronic imaging, holography, lasers, optoelectronics, smart materials, nanomaterials, and nonlinear optics, just to mention a few. Congratulations to them all for their outstanding contributions."
New Fellows are recognized at SPIE meetings of their choice throughout the year. This year, new Fellows are scheduled to be honored at SPIE events including Photonics West, Medical Imaging, Smart Structures/NDE, DSS, Photonics Europe, Astronomical Telescopes and Instrumentation, and Optics + Photonics.
"I wish to extend my personal congratulations to each of our 2014 SPIE Fellows," said SPIE President Philip Stahl, senior optical physicist at NASA Marshall Space Flight Center. "Fellows are members of distinction who are recognized by their peers for their exceptional professional achievement, contributions to the optics community, and service to SPIE. They are our society's role models and mentors. As a graduate student and junior engineer, I looked up to those with the Fellow ribbon below their name badge, and I continue to admire the accomplishments of SPIE's Fellows and appreciate their contributions. I welcome our 76 newest Fellows."
