Michael T. Eismann was awarded the Joseph W. Goodman Book Writing Award for his 2012 SPIE Press publication, Hyperspectral Remote Sensing. Presenting the award are SPIE Board Member Jim McNally and 2018 Symposium Chair Arthur Morrish

BELLINGHAM, Washington, USA and CARDIFF, UK - During a ceremony immediately preceding the SPIE Defense + Commercial Sensing (DCS) plenary yesterday evening in Orlando, Florida, USA, Michael T. Eismann was awarded the Joseph W. Goodman Book Writing Award for Hyperspectral Remote Sensing. Dr. Eismann is being recognized for "an outstanding book in the field of optics and photonics that has contributed significantly to research, teaching, or the optics and photonics industry." Hyperspectral Remote Sensing was published by SPIE Press in 2012.

Dr. Eismann is chief scientist, Sensors Directorate, Air Force Research Laboratory, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio. He is also editor-in-chief of SPIE's Optical Engineering journal, an SPIE Fellow, a past Board member of SPIE, and was the 2010 chairman of SPIE DCS. He is an internationally recognized authority on passive infrared imaging and hyperspectral remote sensing, and continues to perform both basic and applied defense research in these areas. Additionally, Dr. Eismann serves as an adjunct professor at the Air Force Institute of Technology; Hyperspectral Remote Sensing grew directly out of his course notes for a graduate class he teaches on the topic.

"I am honored to receive this prestigious award," says Dr. Eismann, "especially given the tremendous respect I have for its namesake. I must admit that I never imagined this level of recognition when I started to turn my course notes into a publication-worthy form several years ago."

Hyperspectral remote sensing is an emerging, multidisciplinary field with diverse applications that builds on the principles of material spectroscopy, radiative transfer, imaging spectrometry, and hyperspectral data processing. While there are many resources that suitably cover these areas individually and focus on specific aspects of the hyperspectral remote sensing field, Dr. Eismann's Hyperspectral Remote Sensing provides a holistic treatment that captures its multidisciplinary nature.

"The completeness of the text is unquestionable," says SPIE member Dr. Peter Marasco, the technology advisor for Electro-Optical Sensing in the Air Force Research Laboratory, Sensors Directorate, Multispectral Sensing and Detection Division. "Hyperspectral remote sensing is a science requiring the understanding of a number of disciplines to work within it effectively. In his book, Dr. Eismann takes a systems-level look, covering all the main elements of hyperspectral remote sensing: where materials derive their spectral properties, what airborne sensors measure, how hyperspectral sensors operate, and how the data is analyzed. There really is no other text in this scientific discipline that covers the same scope of material, and the depth of technical detail is appropriate for both the student and the seasoned engineer."

The Joseph W. Goodman Book Writing Award is a biennial award funded by J.W. and H.M. Goodman. The award recognizes authorship of an outstanding book in the field of optics and photonics, published in the last six years, that has contributed significantly to research, teaching, or the optics and photonics industry. This award is co-sponsored by SPIE and OSA.

About SPIE

SPIE is the international society for optics and photonics, an educational not-for-profit organization founded in 1955 to advance light-based science, engineering, and technology. The Society serves nearly 264,000 constituents from approximately 166 countries, offering conferences and their published proceedings, continuing education, books, journals, and the SPIE Digital Library. In 2017, SPIE provided more than $4 million in support of education and outreach programs. www.spie.org.
