BELLINGHAM, WA, USA - 20 November 2007 - Computer-aided diagnosis (CAD), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) are among hot topics at the SPIE Medical Imaging conference in San Diego, CA, USA, in February. The event will draw a multidisciplinary international research community to San Diego's Town & Country Resort and Convention Center 16-21 February 2008.
SPIE Medical Imaging covers medical image acquisition, display, processing, understanding, perception, storage, and transmission. Focus is on modalities such as x-ray with image visualization through both digital radiography (DR) and computed tomography (CT), positron emission tomography (PET), MRI, MRS, and ultrasound, and combinations of these modalities. John Gore, Vanderbilt Univ. Institute of Imaging Science, will give an all-symposium plenary presentation on "Challenges and opportunities of ultrahigh-field MRI and MRS." He will analyze technical innovations such as dynamic shimming, novel spectral-spatial excitation methods, and others that in combination may enable ultrahigh-field imaging and spectroscopy to achieve greater potential.
Evening technical workshops will include a focus session led by Robert Nishikawa, Univ. of Chicago, addressing some controversies around the use of computer-aided detection (CADe) for diagnosis and screening.
A special session will review progress in virtual endoscopy over the past decade and include a panel discussion to place past developments in context and speculate on the future of the technology. The session is part of the conference on Physiology, Function, and Structure from Medical Images.
A panel from the National Institutes of Health will discuss the NIH grants process and grant support opportunities offered by the Small Business Innovative Research Program. Center for Scientific Review representatives also will be available for one-on-one sessions on funding options.
Very active evening poster sessions featuring more than 430 poster papers will provide an opportunity for one-on-one interaction with the authors. Best Poster Awards will be announced during the poster sessions.
A complementary suite of 13 courses is scheduled for the beginning of the week, including three new courses on computer-aided diagnosis, validation in medical image processing, and consistent color presentation for medical display.
Components, systems, and resources for medical imaging technologies and applications will be showcased by 20 vendors in the Medical Imaging exhibition.
