First Minister of Wales will open SPIE Europe conferences
on Remote Sensing and Security+Defence

CARDIFF, WALES, UK - 10 September 2008 - Wales' First Minister and Assembly Member Rhodri Morgan will address an international audience of optics and photonics scientists and innovators at conferences on Remote Sensing and Security+Defence next week at the University of Wales Institute, Cardiff. The event is sponsored by SPIE Europe.

First Minister Morgan will give an opening-session talk on the region's thriving private- and public-sector optics and photonics community. Wales is home to numerous industry and research facilities which specialise in those technologies and collectively are responsible for over £717 million a year in revenues.

The Lord Mayor of the City and County of Cardiff, Councillor Kate Lloyd, will attend a welcome reception for event attendees.

The technical programme will feature research and innovation experts from around the region and throughout the world. Plenary presentations will be given by:

  • Frances Saunders, CEO of the UK Defence Science and Technology Lab., on "Science on the Front Line and on the Home Front"
  • Jim Ironside, Chief Scientist of General Dynamics UK Ltd., on "Reconciling the Interests of Industry and Government in Research and Development"
  • Waleed Abdalati, Head of the Cryospheric Sciences Branch at NASA Goddard Space Flight Ctr., on "The Secrets of Polar Change through the Lens of Remote Sensing"
  • Richard Holdaway,Director of Space Science & Technology at Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, on "Does Space Matter? - Remote Sensing Points the Way."

Co-locating the Remote Sensing and Security+Defence events enables closer collaboration between the two communities. Participants in either programme will have access to the oral and poster presentations in both.

An exhibition featuring applications and technology for both symposia will include 34 companies showing products detectors, sensors, lasers, and imaging equipment for the Security+Defence community along with products for the remote sensing audience.

Now in its 15th year, SPIE Europe Remote Sensing is the largest annual meeting in Europe on the topic. The event offers comprehensive coverage of the fast-growing remote sensing indSPIE Remote Sensingustry, including next-generation satellites, SAR image analysis, LIDAR technologies and more. Symposium chairs are Guido D'Urso, Universitá degli Napoli Federico II, and Steven P. Neeck, NASA Headquarters.

The ten-conference technical programme will cover the latest technologies and applications for sensor technologies, environmental sensing, and signal and image processing, with topics such as Remote Sensing of Clouds and the Atmosphere; SAR Image Analysis, Modeling, and Techniques; Remote Sensing for Agriculture, Ecosystems, and Hydrology; and Sensors, Systems, and Next-Generation Satellites. Papers on remote sensing of clouds and the atmosphere and for agriculture, ecosystems, and hydrology will provide insights on how to increase the ability to analyze effects of climate change on agricultural crops, assess soil moisture, and track weather systems. SPIE Europe Security+Defence will draw top researchers and leaders from industry, acaSPIE Europe Security+Defencedemia, and the military. Areas of focus include biological and chemical sensing, unmanned/unattended sensors, imaging and display technologies, and optical materials. David Titterton, Defence Science and Technology Lab, is the symposium chair.

The technical programme includes eight conferences covering topics such as Technologies for Optical Countermeasures, Optically Based Biological and Chemical Detection for Defence, Millimetre Wave and Terahertz Sensors and Technology, and Unmanned/Unattended Sensors and Sensor Networks.
