Illumination, imaging, more to be featured at SPIE Europe's Optical Systems Design
CARDIFF, UK - 1 May 2008 - Optical instruments are components in an ever-increasing number of industrial and research applications, including imaging and vision, defense, space, telecommunications, transportation, industrial process control, laser fusion, and more. Cutting-edge optical technology in these applications will be presented at the Optical Systems Design 2008 meeting at the Glasgow Caledonian University in Scotland 2-5 September. The meeting is held every three years and is sponsored by SPIE Europe, an educational not-for-profit optics and photonics professional society advancing light-based technologies.
A new conference on illumination optics will join conferences on optical design and engineering, optical thin films, detectors and associated signal processing, and optical fabrication, testing, and metrology. The professional education program features three short courses, on precision machining of optics and fundamental and advanced topics in optical thin films, with instructors from European optics and photonics industry.
An exhibition featuring approximately 20 companies showing their latest innovations in optical design will be held 3-4 September. Admission to the exhibition is free of charge.
This year's event will see the return of company tours for paid conference attendees the day before the conference opens. Sponsors of the 1 September tour are Thales Optronics Ltd., Institute of Photonics, and Coherent Scotland.
The 2008 winner of the Michael Kidger Memorial Scholarship in Optical Design will be announced at a reception hosted by the city of Glasgow on 2 September. Tina Kidger, proprietor of Kidger Optics Associates, and SPIE, cosponsors of the award, will make the presentation. The 2007 Kidger award went to Florian Fournier, a graduate research assistant at the College of Optics and Photonics, University of Central Florida.
