BELLINGHAM, Washington, USA -- New conferences on imaging and printing in a Web 2.0 world, 3D image processing applications, and computer vision and image analysis of art have been added to Electronic Imaging 2010. The event is jointly sponsored by the Society for Imaging Science and Technology (IS&T) and SPIE, and will run 17-21 January in the San Jose, Calif., Marriott Hotel and Convention Center.
IS&T/SPIE Electronic Imaging convenes the world's top researchers and developers of imaging systems, instrumentation, 3D, and image processing. Technical sessions cover all aspects of electronic imaging -- image sensing, displays, digital photography, color hardcopy, human vision, image processing and compression, image quality, image security, multimedia imaging systems, and more.
Avideh Zakhor, Univ. of California, Berkeley, will give one of two all-symposium plenary talks, discussing automatic 3D modeling and its applications for large urban environments. Three-dimensional modeling of objects, scenes, and urban environments is useful in applications such as urban planning, training, and simulation for disaster scenarios;virtual heritage conservation; and combating urban terrorism.
An all-symposium plenary talk by Edward J. Delp III, Purdue Univ., will describe future uses of new mobile connected devices, predicted to be the principal or only communications tool for many. Delp will discuss uses including context-based information such as geo-location and applications including language translation, healthcare delivery, and the use of on-board sensors.
A hands-on all-symposium demonstration session will showcase hardware, software, display, and research products related to topics from throughout the Electronic Imaging symposium. The annual demonstration session includes the largest and most diverse collection of stereoscopic research and products in one location, and is frequently the venue for new product launches in the field. An interactive paper session and an exhibition are held in conjunction with the demonstration session.
In the conference on Stereoscopic Displays and Applications (SD&A), Bob Whitehill, Stereoscopic Supervisor at Pixar Animation Studios, will give a keynote talk on the use of 3D as a powerful storytelling tool, using examples from Pixar's "Up," "Toy Story," and "Toy Story 2."
One of two expert panels in SD&A will lead discussion on the status of standards for 3D video. Moderator is Mike Weissman of TrueVision Systems, and panel members are David Broberg, Society of Cable Telecommunications Engineers and CableLabs; Pete Ludé, Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers and Sony Electronics; Mark Stockfisch, Consumer Electronics Association and Quantum Data; and Steve Venuti, HDMI Licensing LLC.
A second panel of experts will discuss the business of 3D and business models for home and industry applications as well as cinema. The moderator is Chris Chinnock of Insight Media, and panel members are Jim Calverley, FujiFilm; Chris Ward, Lightspeed Design; Sunil Jain, Intel Corp.; and Lenny Lipton, Oculus 3D.
The annual 3D Theatre Session in SD&A will showcase large-screen examples of how 3D movie and video content is being used and produced around the world. Productions included in the program will encompass the whole range from Hollywood movies to independent productions.
