Possibilities for 3D imaging are hot topics at IS&T/SPIE Electronic Imaging Symposium

BELLINGHAM, WA, USA - 13 February 2008 - Potential advances offered by 3D stereo imaging in medical uses from genomics to microsurgery as well as in remote sensing and astronomy were of high interest at the recent IS&T/SPIE Electronic Imaging Science & Technology symposium. Approximately 1150 researchers from some 30 countries met at the San Jose, California, Convention Center 27-31 January to hear reports on the latest work in these and other electronic imaging topics.

Potential applications of 3D stereo imaging technology would be in showing several views of an object, or in comparing multiple objects or scenes. These might include biologically correct displays for monitoring disease treatment and progress, 3D images of the Sun and other celestial bodies, or images for agricultural studies showing contrasts between and relationships among vegetation growth patterns. The cultural preservation community also sees potential uses, for example in creating a virtual museum in which a remote viewer would see artworks as they are hung on the walls in an actual facility.

More than 800 papers were presented in 20 technical conferences, with high interest shown in sessions on stereoscopic displays and applications, digital photography, and human vision. A popular interactive evening poster paper and demonstration session gave attendees a chance to see a diverse collection of stereoscopic and other imaging research, products, and displays.

Plenary speakers included:

  • Hany Farid, David T. McLaughlin Distinguished Professor of Computer Science and Associate Chair of Computer Science at Dartmouth College, speaking on "Digital forensics."
  • David Bolinsky, Medical Director and Partner of XVIVO Scientific Animation, speaking on "The making of the 'Inner Life of the Cell'."

James Janesick, Distinguished Engineer at Sarnoff Corporation and a Fellow of SPIE, was awarded the Electronic Imaging annual "Imaging Scientist of the Year" award for his outstanding service and significant contributions to the electronic imaging community in the area of CCDs and CMOS sensors.

Next year's IS&T/SPIE Electronic Imaging Science and Technology symposium will return to the San Jose Convention Center, 18-22 January 2009.
